Pediatric Eye Care

Pediatric optometry refers to the examination of children's eyes by optometrists who are trained to evaluate and treat visual disorders in children.

How do you examine my children's eyes when they are too young to talk?

The vision examination by the optometrists includes evaluation of the child's eye muscle movements, visual behavior, and dilation of the eyes. The dilation of the eye allows the doctor to determine if there is a need for glasses in the child's eye even if the child is non-verbal. The dilation also allows the doctor to view the structures inside the eye to look for abnormalities of the retina or optic nerve.

What if my child needs glasses?

If it is determined that your child needs glasses, the optometrist or ophthalmologist will write a prescription for eyeglasses and tell you how to fill that prescription and how your child should wear the glasses.

Can my child wear contact lenses?

Yes.  Age 12 is an approximate age that we start discussing contacts with the child and their parents.  Some children can be ready at a younger age.  The optometrist and parents can determine together when each child is ready for contact lenses.

Should I schedule an appointment with the optometrist or ophthalmologist?

When you call to schedule your appointment, the assistant will ask you a few questions to help determine which doctor you should see.
